Hide Curing Salt Crystals

Drilling Mud Salt Crystals
Salt has been used for many years in the oil drilling industry. Drilling muds are used to lubricate and cool the drill bit during the drilling process. The use of straight water as the basis of the mud can cause erosion in the well cavity, causing the walls of the well to collapse. This problem can be eliminated by using a salt based brine solution instead of using water.

Water Softening Crystals
Salt is used in both industrial and home water softening units. Salt for this purpose is usually a washed or refined grade. A similar type of salt is used for making a brine for brine cooling systems.
Water is considered to be hard when it contains traces of calcium and magnesium, known as hardness ions. Hard water requires more soap and detergent for laundering, cleaning and bathing because suds do not form as well in hard water. The reaction between soap and hard water can result in a greasy, curd-like deposit which makes fabrics feel harsh and can leave water spots on dishes and utensils. Mineral scale can also build up in hot water appliances and industrial boilers, reducing energy efficiency and shortening appliance and equipment life. Water is conditioned or softened by removing the calcium and magnesium ions from hard water and replacing them with "soft" sodium ions. Water softeners use cation exchange resin to exchange sodium for calcium and magnesium. As supply water flows through the resin bed, the exchange takes place and the water becomes soft. Water softener cation exchange resins are regenerated with a 10% salt brine solution made by dissolving water softener salt.
